April 25: Liberation between culture and nature

To celebrate the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day and to honor a day of high historical and symbolic value, events and activities involving entire generations are planned again this year in Abruzzo and Lazio, thanks to the variety of proposals.

In Abruzzo’s main cities there will be re-enactments, memorial ceremonies, historical tributes, concerts, exhibitions, screenings, bike rides and trekking: the program is very wide-ranging, starting with the nationwide initiative of the Ministry of Culture , which stipulates that state museums and cultural sites will be open to the public with free admission. A good opportunity to discover and visit the 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐢 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢 in Chieti, the MuNDA – Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo in L’Aquila, or the Abruzzo poet’s birthplace that has become the D’Annunzio House Museum, in Pescara.

In L’Aquila, in addition to the classic ceremonies and re-enactments, there will be an alternative way to demonstrate: the Italian Environmental and Bicycle Federation (FIAB) is promoting “Resist Pedaling Resist“, a national event that combines the importance of historical remembrance with cycling activity and the enhancement of the territory, a bicycle excursion to L’Aquila’s Resistance sites with a visit to the village Onna, enriched by direct testimonies and cultural moments. Also planned for the day is the special opening of the Museum of Popular History by Onna non-profit organization.

From Sulmona, however, will start on April 26 the XXII edition of the The Freedom Trail – FREEDOM TRAIL, which will touch three other municipalities in the territory, created to recall the historical memory of World War II by retracing what are called the “paths of freedom,” bearing witness to the sacrifice of men, women and children who in some cases paid with their lives the price for the freedom of future generations.

In Pescara, the ANPI associations and the CGIL trade union body are organizing a day full of commemorative events and debates, which will end with a free concert by the Modena City Ramblers.

It is in Rome, however, that the largest nationwide demonstrations will take place: the first event on Thursday morning is organized by the ANPI, with a tribute to the Martyrs of the Fosse Ardeatine followed by a procession that will end at Porta San Paolo, a symbol of the Roman uprising against the Nazi-Fascists.

During the day there will be access to the many Museums, Historical Palaces, archaeological parks, all with free admission.

In addition, from April 23 to 25, the “Resistance Day“: three days of events, with about 80 events including lectures, meetings, performances, concerts, screenings and exhibitions, to remember and share the values of the Italian Resistance in the places in the city where partisans fought eighty years ago. Guests include Corrado Augias, Alessandro Barbero and Ezio Mauro. All initiatives are free and free admission.
