Ortona, this year’s new entry, was awarded the coveted recognition by the Foundation for Environmental Education, raising Abruzzo to 6th place in the national rankings, and to 15 the number of seaside resorts that meet criteria related to sustainable land management. The Blue Flag is an international recognition, established in 1987, which is awarded annually in 49 countries with the main objective of directing the local management policy of many resorts on the Riviera, towards a process of environmental sustainability.
In Italy, 236 seaside resorts and 81 tourist landings were awarded this year whose bathing waters were found to be excellent and which have made efforts to solve and improve over time issues related to land management, offering a strong focus on environmental protection, but also on accessibility and services for bathers. The 32 parameters required for the Blue Flag award include actions to protect local wildlife, but also the presence of properly trained beach attendants and quality equipment to make beach vacations comfortable for people with disabilities.
The other locations reconfirmed in Abruzzo are Francavilla al Mare, Fossacesia, Vasto, San Salvo, Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto, Silvi, and Pescara along with the lakes of Scanno and Villalago.
