With the arrival of warm weather, Rome starts again with its outdoor events dedicated to tourists and citizens of all age groups.
From May 6 to 19, in the beautiful setting of the Foro Italico, the most watched sports event of recent years returns: the International BNL of Italy of tennis. For the first time, this year Piazza del Popolo will host a clay court made to allow the women’s pre-qualification to take place on which children from various tennis schools will also be able to try their hand at an unforgettable experience.
The 25th edition of the Race for the Cure will take place from May 9 to 12 : four days of free events and initiatives dedicated to health, sports and solidarity, culminating on Sunday with the traditional 5-kilometer run (or 2-kilometer walk) along the streets of the city center. Prevention and the protection of women’s health are the main theme of the Health Village, set up for the four days at Circus Maximus and which will host a series of events, conferences, workshops and visits within it.
On Saturday, May 18, a much-loved traditional event returns: the Night of the Museums . Every year since 2009, on the Saturday evening closest toInternational Museum Day, the City of Rome joins in by organizing a festive night in the city dedicated to art and entertainment: the spaces of the Sistema Musei di Roma Capitale and some of the city’s most important cultural venues remain exceptionally open to the public from 8 p.m. to late at night, to offer Romans and tourists “after-hours” dreams and excitement and to attend a rich program of concerts and performances of music, theater and dance.
On the occasion of Pentecost, there will be the customary Rain of Rose Petals at the Pantheon on May 19. Immediately after the celebration of mass, as was also the case in medieval years, thousands of red rose petals are dropped on the faithful from theoculus of the dome, the 9-meter-diameter circular opening that radiates light and heat inside the temple. A unique spectacle that attracts many worshippers as well as tourists.
In the picturesque Villa Borghese, equestrian sports fans will have the opportunity to experience the 91st CSIO of Rome in the green oval of Piazza di Siena; the prestigious equestrian competition will be held from May 22 to 26, and will offer amazons and riders the chance to compete side by side with the greatest equestrian champions. Ample space is also dedicated to simple fans, who will be able to experience the magical atmosphere of Villa Borghese immersed in history, art, design and architecture.
The Giro d’Italia, the most important national cycling race and one of the most prestigious in the world along with the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta, will end on Sunday, May 26 , in Rome with the finish line set at the Imperial Forum. Also this year, for the fifth time in the history of the event and for the second consecutive year, the 21st and final stage of the race will end on the streets of the capital.
For fans of comic strips, there will be three days dedicated to stories, signs and drawings at the locations of the Slaughterhouse and the City of the Other Economy with ARF! The Comic Book Festival May 24 to 26. During the festival lovers of independent Italian comics will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of exhibitions, unmissable meetings-events, international guests, lectio magistralis with the great masters.
