Efforts on the safety front have further lowered the Overall Incident Rate from 70.6 in 1991 to 39.38 in 2023 and the mortality rate from 1.5 in 1991 to 0.26 in 2023, achieving the important goal set by the European Union of reducing mortality by 50 percent by 2009.
Since 2009, also on the safety front, Strada dei Parchi has been issuing specific ordinancesrequiring transit with winter equipment (snow tires or chains on board) during the winter season, from November 15 to April 15 of the following year, for almost the entire highway network under concession.
Maintenance sites
Maintenance worksites are essential for the safety of travelers. Operations are carried out according to the following management standards (see the Road Management section for more details).
Strada dei Parchi, in order to increase safety, has planned to install construction site signs to supplement those specified by the Highway Code.
Summary of standards for temporary signaling and performance of highway work.
In addition, Parks Road has developed a Road Operator Safety Guideline to ensure and continuously improve the health and safety of workers.
Winter operations
In 2005, a Protocol was established between the Ministries of Infrastructure, Transport and the Interior, Aiscat, Anas and the Haulers’ Associations, which stipulates, as is already the case in the rest of Europe, that in the event of heavy snowfall, trucks will be temporarily stopped in specially designated areas.
Management of the road system in adverse weather conditions also includes:
- A corporate endowment of 238 vehicles and special equipment
- The continued availability of 490 internal and external staff
- salting treatments for ice prevention
- The timely deployment and satellite tracking of snow removal vehicles.
