September 27 is World Tourism Day and it is the right opportunity to discover or even return to enjoy 10 wonders between Lazio and Abruzzo, via Strada dei Parchi with its A24 and A25 highways.
This edition’s theme is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the declination of an adventure in beauty under the banner of responsible tourism, capable of becoming an engine of economic development while respecting places and people.
So here are our 10 wonders for you this year:
CAMPO IMPERATORE, the plateau between 1,500 and 2,100 meters above sea level in the province of L’Aquila, in the heart of the Gran Sasso massif of Italy and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park;
EREMO DI SANTO SPIRITO A MAIELLA, a monastery of the Celestine Congregation built around the 11th century, nestled on the side of Mount Maiella in the municipality of Roccamorice in the province of Pescara;
ROCCA CALASCIO, the famous castle in the municipality of Calascio in the province of L’Aquila, among the tallest in Europe, beloved by cinema and chosen as a set by numerous films;
VILLA D’ESTE, the pearl of the Italian Renaissance in Tivoli in the province of Rome, with its more than 50 fountains and nymphaea, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list;
COSTA DEI TRABOCCHI, the stretch of Adriatic coastline in the province of Chieti that takes its name from the “Trabocchi,” the ancient fishing machines on stilts dating back to the 18th century, spread along the coastline of the municipalities of Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, San Vito Chietino, Rocca San Giovanni, Fossacesia, Torino di Sangro, Casalbordino, Vasto, and San Salvo;
PARCO DELL’APPIA ANTICA, the largest urban park in Europe with its 4580 hectares within the municipal territories of Rome, Ciampino and Marino, a valuable green area between the center of the Capital and the Alban Hills;
PIETRACAMELA, the village in the province of Teramo rises at the foot of Prati di Tivo, which rises toward the Corno Piccolo and Corno Grande of the Gran Sasso; the municipality’s territory includes the Corno Grande di Pietracamela Nature Reserve.
SULMONA, a town in inland Abruzzo, located in the Peligna Valley in the province of L’Aquila close to the Maiella National Park, home of the poet Ovid and the famous confetti;
ALBA FUCENS, a colony under Latin law founded by Rome in the fourth century B.C., the vestiges of which can be found in the municipality of Massa d’Albe ten kilometers from Avezzano in the province of L’Aquila;
PINETO the green city overlooking the Adriatic Sea, which includes in its territory the picturesque stretch of coastline protected by the Torre del Cerrano Marine Area.
The A24 and A25 highways are by their very nature the connection available to people who set out to admire the beauty of the territories between Lazio and Abruzzo. From Rome all the way to L’Aquila and Teramo and all the way to the Adriatic coast, these two arteries are the connection to experience a day to remember.
