Immersed in the unspoiled nature of the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park, the Laghetti di San Benedetto represent one of the most striking natural wonders of Lazio. Located a few kilometers from the historic center of Subiaco, these crystal-clear stretches of water are the ideal place for those seeking relaxation, scenic beauty and an authentic contact with nature.
An oasis between history and nature
The small lakes are named after St. Benedict of Norcia, founder of Western monasticism, who lived as a hermit in this very area in the famous Sacro Speco, one of the most fascinating Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The area is thus not only a naturalistic jewel, but also a place of deep spirituality and millennial history.
The small Aniene River, which originates a little further upstream, forms here a series of waterfalls and natural pools with clear, cold waters, set among limestone rocks and lush vegetation. The contrast between the deep green of the forest and the turquoise of the water creates a postcard-perfect setting for hiking, picnicking or simply regenerating away from the chaos of the city.
Hidden and unknown to many until recently, St. Benedict’s Pond has now seen an exponential and all too intrusive growth of a massive tourist flow. The desire for nature, silence and breathtaking scenery must be well reconciled with environmental protection and respect for the land. It is perhaps the smallest lake in Lazio and is located about 400 meters above sea level, 2.5 km from Subiaco, in the narrow, wooded Aniene Valley. 
This natural wonder hidden in the heart of the village is reached via a scenic path that reaches down to the river. The path will lead you to an oasis of peace and tranquility, far from the city chaos. In this still secret corner, you can dive into the cool waters fed by the waterfall and surrounded by poplars, white willows, hazels and hornbeams.
The color of the water takes on all shades of green, depending on the rays of sunlight that create light plays on the body of water.

Getting there
The Laghetti di San Benedetto can be easily reached by car from Rome (about 1 hour and 15 minutes), following the A24 highway to Vicovaro-Mandela and then continuing to Subiaco. A convenient parking lot is located a short distance from the path leading to the ponds.
