World Animal Day in the sign of St. Francis

What better day than October 4 to indulge in deep reflection on how our existence is closely connected to that of the other creatures that populate the Planet? Of course, those who wish can do so on any other day of the year as well, but October 4 is World Animal Day, a day on which action for the rights and welfare of animals is promoted with the goal of raising awareness about their protection and preservation.

Returning to October 4, it is no coincidence that it was chosen to celebrate World Animal Day because it has always been the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. The poor saint is the patron saint of many things, but on this particular occasion, being the patron saint of animals takes on great importance.

Indeed, the day aims to make people reflect on the ecological, cultural and ethical importance of animals, and upon rereading the passage “Praised be you, my Lord, together with all creatures…” from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures, one understands its significance.

THE MARCH FOR CREATE in the SIRENTE VELINO REGIONAL NATURE PARK – And what better occasion to be in Nature’s protecting animal species than to participate in the March for Creation promoted by the Sirente Velino Regional Nature Park?

On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Park together with the Orsa Maggiore Trekking and Environment Guides, is promoting the 22-kilometer march through the municipalities of Collarmele and Gagliano Aterno. An itinerary that for the past 11 years has been winding through spirituality, history and landscape and is marked by moments of reflection and symbolic gestures of reconciliation. Among the most significant are the meeting at the Fonte Cituro, with the intervention of the Carabinieri Forestry Corps on the theme of environmental protection; the return of the meeting in Baullo between the mayors of Collarmele and Gagliano Aterno, recalling the transformation of an ancient border conflict into a renewed dialogue between communities; and the conclusion at the Convent of San Francesco in Castelvecchio Subequo, with a religious celebration.
