Torino di Sangro, in the province of Chieti, is one of this year’s new entries, earning the coveted award given annually by the NGO FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), which places Abruzzo in 7th place in the national ranking of regions with the highest number of flags, and at 16 the number of seaside resorts that comply with criteria related to sustainable land management. The Blue Flag is an international recognition, established in 1987, which is awarded annually in 49 countries with the main objective of directing the local management policy of many resorts on the Riviera, towards a process of environmental sustainability.
In Italy, 246 coastal resorts (10 more than last year, with 15 new entries and 5 municipalities losing their titles instead) and 84 tourist landings were awarded this year, three more than in 2024. These resorts, whose bathing waters were found to be excellent, are committed to solving and improving land management issues over time, offering a strong focus on environmental protection, but also on accessibility and services for bathers. Among the 32 parameters required for the Blue Flag award are actions to protect local wildlife, but also the presence of properly trained beach attendants and quality equipment to make beach vacations comfortable for people with disabilities.
