Every trip along the A24 and A25 highways takes travelers through one of Italy’s most precious natural treasures. Forests, valleys, mountains, protected areas, and habitats that are home to an extraordinary variety of plant and animal species line the route for millions of trips between Lazio and Abruzzo each year.
This landscape did not come about by chance. Trees, meadows, wildflowers, ecosystems, and forests are the result of natural processes that take decades—often centuries or millennia—to develop and reach equilibrium. Yet, a single careless act can be enough to jeopardize it all.
That is why “strada dei parchi” is renewing its commitment to preventing wildfires for the summer of 2026 as well, with an awareness campaign aimed at highway users. The campaign’s new visual conveys this reality immediately: it takes a hundred years to grow a tree, but only a few seconds to destroy it. A simple message that reminds us just how fragile the natural heritage that accompanies our travels truly is.

Most fires are caused by preventable behavior
During the summer months, the risk of wildfires increases due to high temperatures, drought, and wind. In this context, even a simple lapse in attention can pose a danger to the environment, to travelers, and to the communities living in the areas traversed by highways.
Throwing a cigarette butt out the window, leaving flammable materials in rest areas, lighting outdoor fires, or using open flames where it is not permitted are actions that can start fires with uncontrollable and extremely serious consequences.
Every driver can provide valuable assistance
Drivers on the A24 and A25 highways are often in the best position to quickly spot plumes of smoke, burning brush, or possible fires.
That is why “strada dei parchi” urges users to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity immediately. A timely call can make the difference between a small fire in its early stages and one that spreads over a wide area.
If you see smoke or flames, it is essential to immediately call 112, the Single Emergency Number, and provide as precise a description as possible of the location of the incident.
Protecting the environment also means protecting travelers
Forest fires do not only threaten our natural heritage. Smoke can drastically reduce visibility, compromise traffic safety, and require complex interventions to ensure that infrastructure remains passable.
For this reason, environmental protection and road safety are two closely linked objectives. “strada dei parchi” continues to ensure constant monitoring along the highway network and has personnel and vehicles dedicated to initial fire response, operating along the entire length of the A24 and A25 highways, particularly in the most important tunnels.
The landscape we see out the window is not just the backdrop to our journey: it is a heritage built by nature over generations, and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect it.
Do not throw away cigarette butts.
Do not leave flammable waste behind.
Do not light fires.
And if you see smoke or flames, call 112 immediately.
