Canoeing on the Tirino River

If you are looking for wilderness hiking and crystal-clear waters with cool, rejuvenating temperatures, then the Tirino River is for you. On the southern slope of the Gran Sasso, from the headwaters of Capo d’Acqua and Presciano, flow the clear waters of this river considered among the cleanest in Italy. The cooperative the Bosso has been organizing canoe trips and accompanying (paddling) visitors among the natural beauty of the valley for 15 years.

The route, among herons, trout and an ecosystem that has remained unspoiled, involves leaving from the town of Capestrano, arriving at the headwaters of the Tirino River, and then returning to the starting point. The canoe trip lasts about two hours and also includes, for the more daring, the possibility of diving into the river’s waters, which never exceed 11 degrees, even in summer. The Tirino River originates from three springs that, each year, release downstream a large amount of water collected from the Gran Sasso. Coming from resurgent sources, the river water always remains clean. The Tirino is frequented by anglers who practice spinning or fly fishing, and excursions on the river, due to the ease of the route, are particularly suitable for families, those who want to discover a hidden natural treasure.
