Foliage: the poetry of autumn

Every year, autumn paints landscapes with warm and vibrant brushstrokes: green gives way to shades of red, orange, yellow and bronze. It is the phenomenon of
foliage
, a natural enchantment that transforms forests, parks and tree-lined avenues into fairy-tale scenery. Walking among the fallen leaves, breathing in the crisp air and watching the slow change of nature is an invitation to contemplation and wonder. Foliage is not just beauty: it is a time of transition, a silent message reminding us of the value of change.

Autumn in Abruzzo is a symphony of colors, scents and silences. When the leaves begin to turn red, gold and orange, this region is transformed into an impressionist painting, where every path becomes poetry and every forest tells a story. The spectacle, in the region, finds its greatest expression in the woods of the Zompo lo Schioppo Nature Reserve, among waterfalls and paths immersed in silence, and in the Maiella National Park, where beech and maple trees provide breathtaking views along the sheep-tracks and ancient transhumance routes.

Rome, with its historic parks, is also dressed in autumn: walking through the avenues of the Aqueducts Park or through the greenery of the Villa Doria Pamphilj Garden means immersing oneself in a suspended atmosphere, where the beauty of change becomes tangible.

Where to see foliage in Abruzzo

Here are some of the most striking places to experience foliage in Abruzzo:

1. Bosco di Sant’Antonio – Pescocostanzo (AQ)

A sacred place since ancient times, where monumental beech trees open like candelabra to the sky. The trails are suitable for everyone and offer fairy-tale views, perfect for a contemplative walk.

2. Lama Bianca Forest – Sant’Eufemia a Maiella (PE)

A true natural sanctuary, where beech trees create a colorful canopy above the path. Trails range from easy to scenic, with views as far as the Gran Sasso and the sea.

3. Forca d’Acero – Opi (AQ)

Apennine pass nestled in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The foliage here is spectacular, with forests glowing red and orange. Ideal for photographic excursions and light trekking.

4. Val Fondillo – Pescasseroli (AQ)

A corner of biodiversity where foliage blends with wildlife. Hikes at dusk allow you to hear the deer roaring, making the experience even more magical.

5. Val Cervara – Villavallelonga (AQ)

One of Europe’s oldest ancient forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Centuries-old beech trees are tinged with copper and gold, creating a mystical and silent atmosphere.

After a walk through the colors of the woods, nothing beats stopping at a local trattoria to enjoy chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, polenta and a glass of new wine. Abruzzo autumn is also a journey into authentic flavors.

The ideal time to view foliage in Abruzzo is from mid-October through late November, peaking in late October and early November. The different altitudes allow the spectacle to be enjoyed for nearly two months.

Foliage in Abruzzo is not just a natural phenomenon, but an invitation to slow down, breathe, observe. It is a journey inside beauty, among forests that look like paintings and paths that speak to the heart.
