Theoasis where to take refuge from the summer heat and be able to appreciate the beauty of the blue spring waters is just outside Pescara, in the municipality of Scafa. It is the Lavino sulfur spring equipped park that covers an area of 40 hectares.
Since 1987 it has been a protected natural area of Abruzzo. The park takes its name from the Lavino River, whose sulfurous waters are a wonderful color between blue and turquoise. The Lavino River originates in the Vallone di Santo Spirito, the northern part of the Majella mountain range, and, after passing Scafa, flows into the waters of the Pescara River. It is a striking complex, a palette of colors thanks to the small lakes that fade from a beautiful blue color to turquoise due to the presence of special algae and dissolved sulfates with varied and rich vegetation.
These same waters in the past were used to power the blades of a 16th-century mill, the Farnese Mill, which can be admired by taking a walk along the Lavino River. They also powered the turbine of a hydroelectric power plant or, through the construction of canals and barriers, were useful for irrigating the surrounding agricultural fields.
It is an area with natural and environmental features that are able to satisfy and reconcile leisure time with respect for the natural heritage. Poplar, white willow and elder groves cover most of the park, with extensive areas of broom, hawthorn and marsh plants such as reed or rush near the watercourse. Animal species also contribute to “coloring” the protected area with kingfishers, yellow wagtails, moorhens, goldfinches and river warblers along with hedgehogs, foxes and martens also present in the area.
The Lavino River Park is accessed via a lane about a hundred meters long, which is easy to walk. At the entrance to the park is an area equipped with facilities and games for children and with wooden tables and benches for an outdoor picnic. It is a level walk on a path through the woods, really within everyone’s reach, pleasant even in summer and without calculating the various stops, you walk for thirty or forty minutes at most. The area is unfenced, so entry is free and not time-bound. Volunteers from the local club of Legambiente. The recommended starting point is the village of Scafa.
