Raiano and the ancient beneficial waters of La Solfa spring

Thermal exploitation in Raiano was active from the time of imperial Rome: this is confirmed, though dimly visible, by the ruins and traces of the ancient activity.
The sulfur waters of Raiano flow from the spring called La Solfa and are found in a very special environment with walls dating back to the second century B.C., which, according to some studies, attest to the fact that this place was frequented since ancient times. The presence of these remains, combined with archaeological data and the value that water had in those very times, suggests that the spring was considered by the ancients as “sacred.” The Raiano hot springs are qualified as sulfurous, excellent for their diuretic and purifying action . To collect and use these waters, the Ovid Spa establishment arose.

The establishment is joined by a center for aesthetic spa medicine, equipped with a gymnasium, thermal pools with differentiated temperatures and equipped with state-of-the-art electromedical equipment.
Making a stay in this small town, nestled in the green hills of Abruzzo, even more pleasant is the possibility of indulging in nature walks and excursions of historical and artistic interest, for example to nearby Sulmona, a splendid town that was the birthplace of the Latin poet Ovid. Worth visiting in the town are the 15th-century Palazzo dell’Annunziata, now home to the civic museum, and the adjoining church, built in 1320.
Also 5 kilometers from the town are a monumental spring identified as the Ovidian “Fountain of Love” and the remains of the so-called “Villa of Ovid”-actually a sanctuary of Hercules Curino-dating back to the mid-1st century B.C.
