Parks Road: safety and wildlife protection on A24 and A25

Strada dei Parchi reaffirms its commitment to the integration of road safety and biodiversity protection. The A24 and A25 highways are not only strategic arteries linking Rome and the capitals of Abruzzo, but they also lap six protected areas, including National and Regional Parks, for which wildlife protection is a priority.

Since January, testing of innovative reflectors installed on sensitive sections of the A25 has been underway. These optical devices, facing away from the roadway, take advantage of the reflection of vehicle headlights to deter wildlife from crossing highways, thus reducing the risk of accidents.

Currently, the highway network is already equipped with 370 km of anti-traversing barriers, which comply with current regulations and undergo constant monitoring and maintenance. However, aware of the need for more advanced solutions to ensure the safety of its users while respecting the species present in the inland areas of Abruzzo and Lazio, Strada dei Parchi has developed an innovative plan for 113 km of new special nets, designed in collaboration with the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (PNALM) and designed to adapt to different species and sizes of animals. The first 4 km have already been installed on the A25, near the Carrito Pass, and approvals are underway to extend the work. Strada dei Parchi has also chosen to anticipate design charges, with its usual proactive and concrete approach.

In addition to frequent wild boar crossings, which are on the rise throughout the country, the A24 and A25 highways have numerous ungulate crossings (deer, fawns, roe deer, etc.), which are particularly frequent during mating season. Highways remain the safest roads for these types of incidents, but Strada dei Parchi continues to invest in state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to make the A24 and A25 even more reliable. Our mission is clear: to ensure the highest standards of safety for our users while minimizing interference with the delicate ecosystems they traverse.
