A24 Fornaca Viaduct: reconstruction begins

Six months after beingdemolished with micro-explosive charges, the new corten steel decks of the Fornaca viaduct, in the direction of L’Aquila, are placed. Work carried out without interrupting highway traffic.

The Fornaca, like its neighbors on the L’Aquila section, is among the first viaducts built on the A24-A25 network. In its more than 50 years of service, it has passed the test of recent earthquakes brilliantly, ensuring the arrival of timely relief to affected populations in 2009. Today the time has come to replace it with a new, safer structure of greater durability and strength.

The new viaduct will retain the layout and conformation of the old one but will be rebuilt with the most advanced engineering criteria, in line with the latest earthquake-resistant construction regulations.
