A24 TPU Rome: Work on the Pittaluga Tunnel is complete; reopening moved up by 24 hours

The work that led to the closure of the Urban Access Section (TPU) of the A24 highway in the direction of the G.R.A., on the section between the Tangenziale Est and the Portonaccio interchange, as well as the simultaneous partial closure of the opposite-direction lane.

Starting at 11:59 p.m. today, August 27, commuters and all users of the A24 highway will once again be able to travel through the Pittaluga Tunnel at full capacity, both in the direction of the G.R.A./L’Aquila/Teramo/A25, and in the direction of the Tangenziale Est/EUR/San Giovanni. The project, which affected one of the most important road corridors in the northeastern quadrant of the capital for most of August, was necessary to carry out major renovation work on the median safety barriers, thereby raising safety standards for users, on a stretch characterized by high traffic volumes and a significant accident rate. Choosing the summer period allowed work to be carried out under conditions of reduced traffic compared to other months of the year, when the stretch is traversed daily by volumes that can reach 38,000 vehicles per direction of travel.

“Effective planning of the work—which involved the contractor’s crews, totaling 30 workers, every day— along with the dedication of “strada dei parchi”’s operational teams and the invaluable support of the Highway Patrol—whom I would like to thank—made it possible to complete the work ahead of schedule and return this strategic interchange to users earlier than planned, at a particularly critical time for transportation, said Costantino Ivoi, CEO of “strada dei parchi“.

Upon the reopening of the highway section , the standard restrictions of the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) on Via di Portonaccio— in the direction of Via Tiburtina— will be reinstated. This zone is reserved for public transit, taxis, and authorized vehicles. Additionally, the left-turn ban at the intersection of Via di Portonaccio and Via Tiburtina will be reinstated, which had been temporarily suspended to facilitate alternative routes while the work was underway.
