Originating in the United States as a university movement and officially established on April 22, 1970, over the years it has managed to mobilize more than a billion people in the 193 U.N. countries involved and is still an occasion to emphasize the need for conservation of natural resources and to assess the many issues that threaten biodiversity. World Earth Day or Earth Day is the largest environmental event on the planet, the only time when all the world’s citizens come together to celebrate the Earth and promote its preservation.
In Lazio there are numerous initiatives dedicated to the day, such as the one that will take place in Rome in the Village for the Earth set up for the occasion at Villa Borghese.

Events related to this global holiday, now in its 54th year, will also be held in Abruzzo, among the most relevant:
On Saturday, April 20, 2024, Nuova Acropoli L’Aquila is proposing a day of ecology and culture in one of the city’s most beloved green areas: the Castle Park. The program includes activities that will combine Philosophy, Culture and Volunteerism, including: a walk in Castle Park between history and nature and there will also be an ecological cleanup of the Park and surrounding areas; there will be games for children, based on the 4 elements of earth, air, water and fire; and there will be the traditional “braid dance” in honor of the earth with the lifting of a paper balloon.
In Pescara, a cleanup organized by Plastic Free will be held on Sunday, April 21: the cleanup consists of the collective cleaning of a chosen place by giving an appointment to a group of volunteers (in this case we meet in Viale Primo Vere, 66) to collect waste that can harm nature and the environment. The same organization has published a calendar with activities that will also take place in other Abruzzo cities, which can be viewed at the Plastic Free Onlus link
Also in L’Aquila, on April 22 there will be the 3rd Plogging Tour of Italy: the Association “Ju Parchetto con Noi” together with WWF Abruzzo Montano are organizing a collection of garbage that you encounter on your path while engaged in jogging. This will be followed in the afternoon at the Palazzetto dei Nobili by a series of talks by experts engaged in the area to illustrate and promote greater individual and collective awareness on topics such as sustainability, land transformations, and environmental psychology.
