Cape Water Lake, diving among medieval mills

headwater lake

In Gran Sasso National Park, 180 kilometers from Rome, there is a small man-made lake that has made the list of the world’s best places to dive . Capo d’Acqua Lake rises on the slopes of Mount Scarafano, and its cold, crystal-clear waters come from the springs from which it gets its name: Capo d’Acqua springs. The reservoir was created in 1965 after the construction of a dam built to dam the course of the Tirino River and convey water to fields where wheat was grown.

“We swim toward the light green seaweed-covered seabed for a few minutes, and soon the outlines of buildings and a stone arch are visible. Imagination leads thoughts to Atlantis and underwater cities.” from the reportage of Sportdikare, a Swedish trade magazine

Dive among the submerged mills
In the grounds, now submerged by the waters, there were two mills and a color mill in medieval times that are still visible to divers today. The seabed is full of ancient objects to admire: medieval artifacts, tree trunks, dwellings and ancient roads that were once traveled by farmers to bring in grain loads. Headwater Lake attracts hundreds of diving enthusiasts from around the world each year. According to the website SportDiver it is among the 50 best sites in the world for diving, La Repubblica cites it among the top ten underwater wonders of Italy.
