Roveto Valley chestnut, the queen of the woods

Roscetta della Valle Roveto chestnut is a variety of chestnut that is among the traditional products of Abruzzo. Castagna Roscetta della Valle Roveto is reddish-brown in color, smooth on the surface and of significant volume, also characterized by the particular sweetness of its flavor.
Its harvesting, which has remained unchanged over the centuries, begins in September with forest clearing operations, and in mid-October it is done by hand in the traditional way, collecting the fruit in baskets.
Chestnuts are preserved by following a special treatment handed down from generation to generation: first kept in water for about 18 days, then put to dry in the sun, and finally stored in a strictly dry place. They can also be toasted (so-called “infornatelle”) and stored throughout the winter.

The production area is included in the mountain territories of the municipalities of Balsorano, Canistro, Capistrello, Castellafiume, Civita d’Antino, Civitella Roveto, Morino and San Vincenzo Valle Roveto, all located in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo.

TheRoveto Valley Chestnut Farmers Association was established a few years ago, with the aim of enhancing the product, through the recovery of abandoned chestnut areas, to the improvement of existing production areas and to give technical information to companies through cultural and scientific activities.
