Due to extraordinary maintenance work to upgrade the traffic-dividing safety barriers on the Urban Access Section of the A24 highway, from 10:00 p.m. on August 2 through August 28 the eastbound carriageway of the Urban Access Section (TPU) of the A24 highway toward the GRA will be closed to traffic between the East Beltway and the Portonaccio Interchange, and traffic on the westbound carriageway will be restricted, with the passing lane closed, between the Portonaccio Interchange and the East Beltway.
These are major projects aimed at raising safety standards for road users on a stretch of road characterized by high traffic volumes. The decision to carry out the work in August stems from the need to minimize inconvenience to the public; this period is in fact characterized by a natural reduction in traffic—both into and out of the capital—due to the summer break from work, school, and business activities.
To prepare the construction site, starting at 10:00 p.m. on August 2, 3, 4, and 5 August at 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. on the following days, there will also be a temporary nighttime closure in the direction of the Tangenziale Est, with mandatory exit at the Portonaccio Interchange and a ban on access for all vehicles coming from Via Torelli and heading toward the Tangenziale Est.
In addition, barring unforeseen circumstances, during nighttime hours only, additional temporary closures will be in effect in the direction of the Tangenziale Est, with a mandatory exit at the Via Portonaccio interchange and a ban on access for all vehicles coming from Via Torelli and heading toward the Tangenziale Est:
- from 10:00 p.m. on August 11, 12, 13, and 14 until 6:00 a.m. on the following days
- from 10:00 p.m. on August 18, 19, 20, and 21 until 6:00 a.m. on the following days
- from 10:00 p.m. on August 24 and 25 to 6:00 a.m. on the following days
In order to prevent traffic congestion at the Portonaccio interchange, the following measures are planned as part of the alternative traffic plan toward the capital:
- Installation of advance warning signs, using variable-message signs and courtesy signage, to direct traffic toward the recommended exit at Via Fiorentini, which is useful for drivers heading both toward Via dei Monti Tiburtini (Figure 1) or toward Via Serenissima/Via Prenestina (Figure 2).
- At the construction site, the exit onto Via Portonaccio may be made mandatory for traffic coming from the GRA/A24 if the Pittaluga Tunnel is closed at night (10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.), including for traffic heading toward the Tangenziale Est. Drivers may use the following routes:

- Route 1 is primarily for users heading toward the city center: Via di Casal Bertone → Via Ettore Fieramosca to Via Prenestina (Figure 3):

- Route 2 for users heading either toward the city center or toward the southern sector: Via di Portonaccio → Via Prenestina (Figure 4):

- Route 3 for users heading either toward the city center or the northern sector: Roma Capitale has authorized a temporary exemption from the current ZTL restrictions on Via di Portonaccio— exclusively during the construction period—in the direction of Via Tiburtina, which is currently reserved for public transit vehicles, taxis, and authorized vehicles, as well as a temporary exemption for left turns at the intersection of Via di Portonaccio and Via Tiburtina. After August 28, these restrictions will be reinstated.
During this period, all vehicles coming from Central Rome/Tangenziale Est and heading toward GRA/East Rome/L’Aquila/Teramo/A25 may use the Portonaccio Interchange to merge onto the A24 highway from Via di Portonaccio.
Specifically, originating from:
- From San Giovanni, take the Via Prenestina exit toward Largo Preneste and continue on Via di Portonaccio toward the GRA (Fig. 5);
In addition, special signage has been installed in the tunnel of the Nuova Circonvallazione Interna (NCI) to exit the Tangenziale Est toward L.go Camasena and continue on Via Tiburtina, toward Via Fiorentini, to access the A24 highway toward the GRA:
- From the Salaria/Foro Italico, it is recommended to exit onto Via M.ti Tiburtini and continue on Via Fiorentini to access the A24 highway toward the GRA (Fig. 6);
- From P.le Verano, it is recommended to take Via Tiburtina and then continue on Via Fiorentini to access the A24 highway toward the GRA (Fig. 7).
